Frequently Asked Questions – CIO Northwest
What is a fractional CIO?
A fractional CIO is a part-time, contract-based IT executive who provides high-level technology strategy, leadership, and oversight—without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire.
What types of businesses do you work with?
We primarily serve small to mid-sized businesses, local governments, and nonprofits in the Columbia Gorge and Pacific Northwest. We’re especially experienced with professional services, healthcare, manufacturing, and civic organizations.
Do you provide hands-on IT support or implementation?
No. We focus on strategy, planning, and oversight. We help you make the right decisions, select the right vendors, and lead IT projects—but we don’t replace your helpdesk or system admin team.
How is this different from a managed service provider (MSP)?
We work for you, not for your vendors. An MSP provides tools and support; we help you evaluate, manage, and align those services with your business goals—often working alongside or above your MSP.
What if we already have an IT person or MSP?
Perfect. We complement your internal or external IT resources by providing executive-level leadership they may not have. We ensure technology efforts stay aligned with the bigger picture.
What does a typical engagement look like?
We often begin with a discovery and roadmap phase (2–3 weeks), followed by a retainer or as-needed consulting. We can help prioritize initiatives, manage projects, assess vendors, or advise leadership on IT-related decisions.
How much do your services cost?
We offer clear pricing:
Discovery projects starting at $2,500
Ad-hoc support blocks at $1,500 (10 hrs)
Monthly retainers available.
Do unused retainer hours roll over?
No. To keep momentum and ensure availability, monthly hours are “use it or lose it.” If you expect light usage, we recommend a block package or smaller engagement.
How do you track hours and updates?
We log time in 15-minute increments and send you a clear, friendly summary of time spent and key updates—no confusing technical reports.
Do you replace our IT staff or consultants?
No. We work alongside your team to elevate performance, not replace it. If needed, we can help you find or evaluate additional resources.
Do you help with cybersecurity?
Yes—at a strategic level. We help you assess risk, review policies, evaluate vendors, and establish governance, but we don’t directly configure firewalls or endpoints.
Can you help us with vendor selection?
Absolutely. We often lead RFP processes, vendor interviews, and selection scoring. We bring an unbiased perspective and speak the language vendors speak.
Are you familiar with government or nonprofit organizations?
Yes. We’ve worked with municipalities, special districts, and nonprofits—especially in the Gorge. We understand public process, and budget sensitivity.
Can you help us plan or validate an IT project?
Yes. Whether it’s a new software platform, a migration, or an infrastructure overhaul, we help define scope, clarify risks, and guide implementation—even if you’re already mid-project.
What if we only need a second opinion?
That’s fine. We offer one-time consultations, audits, or reviews—no long-term commitment required.
How soon can you get started?
In most cases, we can start within 1–2 weeks after an initial consultation. For urgent reviews or support blocks, even sooner.
Can we meet in person?
Yes, if you’re based in the Columbia Gorge or surrounding areas. We also work remotely with clients across Oregon and Washington.
Do you only work in IT?
Our focus is IT strategy, but we support cross-functional efforts related to IT and organizational change.
What makes CIO Northwest different?
We’re not trying to sell software, hardware, or long-term contracts. We’re your independent advocate—experienced, local, and focused on getting things done the right way.
